Sanchez (Looking for Waterfalls, not Oceans)
Marker, Graphite, & Digital Drawing in Adobe Fresco
2021

This is one of two works by daughter Zimmie (at the time she was 3) and myself in the Rad Dad exhibition at Publix Works in the summer of 2021. This was Zimmie and my first official collaboration. She drew the blue and graphite marks and gave it to me to finish. I scanned it, and drew a portrait of my former student Sanchez in Adobe Fresco. When I showed it to Zimmie she was very upset and told me that the drawing she had done was of a cupcake and not of a person. She wanted to title it cupcake, but now she felt like she couldn’t. I told her that we should just name it Sanchez after my student, but we decided that we would add the phrase “looking for waterfalls, not oceans”. This is often exclaimed by Zimmie when we go for walks (she is on the lookout for running water in creeks and streams). I have no idea where that idea came from but I thought it sounded accidentally poetic and felt it was a perfect addition to the title.
